Ah, that explains a bit.  However, immediately after that check is a test
for "!defined(OBJECT_FORMAT_FLAT)" -- shouldn't that catch the case?

(I was wondering why OBJECT_FORMAT_FLAT and OBJECT_FORMAT_ELF might be
defined simultaneously...)
