I built gcc-3.4.6 for testing, but none older than it.

No.
I couldn't find nothing other than CRT_CALL_STATIC_FUNCTIONs between
 this prologue and epilogue, which is PC-relative call, doesn't use GOT.
Of course you can put there anything by asm, but I have not seen such
 a program (other than gcc/*libc). 

I agree with your idea, "just kill them".
