Downloaded the latest snapshot. (July 11)

I have chosen the target 'linux'.
I get:

[....]
make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/gzip-1.3.5'
rm -rf /mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/root/share/locale /mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/root/usr/info \
        /mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/root/usr/man /mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/root/usr/share/doc
(cd /mnt/hda7/buildroot/build_i386/root/bin; \
ln -snf gzip gunzip; \
ln -snf gzip zcat; \
ln -snf zdiff zcmp; \
ln -snf zgrep zegrep; \
ln -snf zgrep zfgrep;)
make: *** No rule to make target `linux', needed by `pcmcia'. Stop.

I would assume 'linux' is a fairly essential piece of the puzzle here.
In addition, I did not not select pcmcia.
