I have used fPIC already for all the packages you've seen (I had it
defined in rpm to use it everywhere, preparing for ET_DYN), no problem
with it, the only generic problem is the usage of fomit-frame-pointer to
make fPIC code quicker (inspired from the hardened project):
Until now: gcc, binutils, uClibc does not build with it.
Other problem encountered until now:
binutils-2.14.90.0.6 (-r7)'s objdump may be stripped, binutils-2.14.90.0.7
(-r3) not.
gcc-3.3.2 (-r2) is used.

I have changed now my gcc specs file to use it automagically and started
recompiling all I have done yet. I haven't integrated it into buildroot.
