[uClibc].note.ABI-tag sections?

hi all

i'm building gdb-5.3 using the CVS buildroot for an arm 720T based system.
when i run gdb on the board, anything i try to debug dies with SIGILL, even
though it runs fine outside of gdb.

the archives mention the use of .note.ABI-tag sections which tell gdb what
sort of breakpoint to insert, but i'm not seeing this section in my executables.

how do i get arm-uclibc-gcc to insert a .note.ABI-tag section in my executables
so that gdb can debug them properly?
