[uClibc]buildroot: automake compile problems

Platform: Gentoo,i386
GCC 2.95.3
uClibc 0.9.17

I am trying to compile a i386 buildroot but cannot get past the 
automake error below.  My machine has both autoconf 2.13 and autoconf 
2.54.  I have updated the buildroot via cvs, but it has not made the 
automake compile problem go away.  I  have not had this problem before 
when compiling buildroot.

configure: error: Autoconf 2.52 or better is required
make: *** 
[/home/jeremy/root/buildroot/build/automake-1.6.3/.configured] Error 1
