As we use PTXdist for our customer project and we spend quite a lot of
payed time customizing it for board support packages I would volunteer
to continue maintaining it ;)

And it's well thought. We don't make operating systems, we just show the
users how they can do it themselves. That's a legal difference. But
however, for the user the difference has no practical impact.
The idea is to have something which actually _documents_ how a system
was compiled. A typical project would look like this:
a) configure the system as you like (system is still under 200 KiB)
b) backup your configuration
c) run 'make world' and backup the src/ directory
d) you now have everything documented.
This serves very well the needs for users with ISO9000 certified
software build processes.

I've no problem with people mirroring the stuff. Contact me if somebody
is interested.

That should already work. However, as PTXdist started for ARM, x86
support still needs some work ;)
