[uClibc]compiling xfree 4.2.1 with uclibc

I'm build a smallish custom linux system from scratch. no legacy distros.
Now I'm tackling X and would like to use uclibc (cvs snapshot). first, I
compiled the xc tree using glibc to make sure my config was OK. next, I
modified the path and tried to build with uclibc. now I'm getting errors
like this:
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/crtend.o:3:471: warning: null
character(s) ignored
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/crtend.o:3:485: warning: null
character(s) ignored
...
/usr/i386-linux-uclibc/lib/crtn.o:1:42: warning: null character(s) ignored
/usr/i386-linux-uclibc/lib/crtn.o:1:48: warning: null character(s) ignored
...
the descriptions I've read for using uclibc to compile xfree do not mention
anything like this. any hints or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
