Don't worry, I've been having much difficulty with the Debian
autubuild system, since each system has a different idea of
which kernel package should be installed.

Note that Debian splits development packages from runtime packages.
Thus uclibc0 could be installed on a target system without much
problem.

In many ways, Debian is already very well suited for embedded
applications, it's just that things aren't documented well or
are well-known outside of Debian.  One example is debootstrap,
which is a shell script that will download all the base packages
and install them, potentially into a target directory.
