Have now :)

Found out what I was doing wrong. One must specify the compiler, linker
etc in the host.def file, rather than merely exporting the path to the
uClibc wrappers. I can't say if it actually works, because the compile
hasn't yet finished, but it is certainly getting past the first stages
where it was stalling last time.

Don't worry, I never compile as root. Far too much of a risk if you
forget to put a DESTDIR= in a make install.
