 Do you really need to be root to be able to run ping? I can run regular
ping as a regular user w/o having to be root? Also I remember that in some
cases ping could be changed to provide a "simple" ping where the only
output is:

    server is alive.

or
    server is down.

Or something of this sort. This way at least we are able to use some sort
of ping to check status of the server as a regular user.
